Making Art Seriously with Andrea Garcia

Andrea Garcia is a 19 year old artist from Brooklyn, NY. She has always had an appreciation for art, but started making art more seriously four years ago. Since, she has found that she can draw inspiration for her work from almost any source. Because of this, Andrea wants art to become her profession – as long as it doesn’t take the fun out of it. Learn more about Andrea by reading our interview with her, after viewing some of her artwork below.

ARTWORK:

INTERVIEW:

How long have you been have you been making art? And what prompted you to start doing so?

I’ve always loved drawing and painting, but it wasn’t until sophomore year of high school that I got serious about it. I started doing it because it was very calming and just sort of natural to me. I really enjoyed the idea that I could think of a visual concept and then create it myself, with my own hands.

And since then has painting become more of a hobby for you? Is it what you plan to do professionally?

Yes it is what I plan to do professionally, but if doing it professionally ever takes the fun out of it for some reason, or makes me hate it, then I wouldn’t want to continue and it would become a hobby again.

Who and what inspires your artwork?

Everything really. A lot of my inspiration comes from visual artists of course, like Dali, Basquiat, Francis Bacon, as well as contemporary artists and so many artists on Instagram. I’m also incredibly inspired by music, currently my favorites are Kanye West, Travis Scott, and Tyler the Creator. Kanye is probably my biggest influence and someone I’ve been listening to with the same passion for four years since I started making art seriously. Generally, I like to grab inspiration from everything around me – books, movies, magazines. I’ll take almost anything, really.

Have you been a part of any art shows? Have you had any shows of your own?

I have not been, besides in high school, but nothing serious. I look forward to participating in one in the future.

Do you have a favorite piece that you’ve done? Or one that you’re most proud of?

Kind of, but not really. I usually feel good about a piece as I’m working on it and when I finish it, but then after a while, I get over it and want to start the next [piece]. But I guess, to answer your question, there is one piece that I made a year ago that I still feel really connected to that might be my favorite.

Can I ask you which piece it is? And why it stands out to you?

It’s this one. I think the caption answers your second question.

Besides creating more expressive and symbolic pieces, what other goals do you have for yourself as an artist? Where do you see yourself a few years down the line?

Hopefully having shows and selling my work in galleries. Ultimately, I’d like to be able to travel the world while working and going to shows.
